Ultherapy Q & A

by Michel Babajanian, MD, FACS

How does Ultherapy work?

Ultherapy, or Ulthera®, is a painless non-invasive procedure that can be done right in the office. During your visit, Dr. Babajanian, or one of his highly trained team members, will use an ultrasound applicator and gradually run it over all areas of your face using the groundbreaking DeepSEE™ technology. This is a combination of “see and treat,” where the practitioner can see underlying skin tissue layers precisely through ultrasound imaging and treat those tissues on the spot. The ultrasound wand sends small amounts of heat energy deep into the layers of your skin and soft tissue. These deep layers are where collagen -- which makes your skin elastic and quick to heal -- tends to be most dense. As these energy waves penetrate your skin, neocollagenesis (formation of new collagen deposits) occurs resulting in tightening effect on loose skin around the neck and face. In selected cases who are good candidates for Ultherapy and have early signs of aging of the neck and facial skin the result is noticeable tight, smooth and more vibrant skin. This is a minimally invasive office based procedure well tolerated by most patients with topical numbing only and with no need for anesthesia or sedation. It can be repeated over the years but is intended to be a one time procedure.

Will I have any pain or redness afterward?

There is minimal redness which resolves overnight after receiving the treatment. Pain is mild to moderate but well tolerated by most patients except for those who are not tolerant of pain in general. Ewe avoid narcotic pain killers all together and use topical numbing creams for pain reduction during the surgery. No pigmentation problems are expected or noted after undergoing Ultherapy since the pigment cells of the skin are not even touched by the ultrasound sound waves.

Is Ultherapy dangerous, or should I have any concerns?

No. Ultherapy is cleared by the FDA for facial and neck skin tightening and rejuvenation. It has been in use for many years and safety record is established quite well. Studies show improvement in skin tightening in areas as sensitive as lower eyelids. Because you don’t have to worry about surgery or any issues with injections, you have very little to worry about with Ultherapy treatments as far as complications. The most important factor is to have realistic expectation and have appropriate selection of patients with mild to moderate skin laxity for this procedure. Depending on the area being treated and your pain tolerance, though, Dr. Babajanian can apply some topical numbing cream to minimize any discomfort you may feel during the procedure. Most patients tolerate the procedure very well with minimal discomfort.
