What is ENT medicine?

ENT medicine, or otolaryngology, refers to the treatment of ear, nose and throat conditions and related structures of the neck and head. Otolaryngologists can diagnose symptoms and subsequent treatment options for patients of all ages.

Ear problems can include infections, balance disorders, tinnitus, nerve pain, and cranial disorders. ENT medicine works to treat sinus, nasal cavity, and allergy issues.

Otolaryngologists also diagnose swallowing and voice disorders as well as treat larynx and upper aero-digestive tract and esophagus diseases.

Certain diseases may infect the face and neck, creating facial trauma and deformities, which can be addressed through surgery. Tumors around the neck or head are also treated with ENT medicine, whether benign or cancerous.

ENT medicine aims to provide treatment solutions for the above issues and determine surgery needs.

What is ENT medicine and surgery used to treat?

Various ear, nose, throat, neck, and head issues can be addressed through either ENT medicine options or surgery such as:

  • Sinusitis
  • Nose and ear infections or injuries
  • Sleep apnea and other sleep disorders
  • Dizziness and vertigo
  • Head and neck pain
  • Larynx issues
  • Throat issues such as swallowing
  • Speech disorders
  • Tonsillitis
  • Facial trauma caused by tumors

If you have any of these conditions, reach out to Dr. Babajanian to discuss treatment options.

What are ENT surgery treatment options?

Dr. Babajanian always communicates with patients after an extensive examination and chooses the most minimally-invasive surgery options if medication does not suffice. Some surgery options include:

  • Ear tubes
  • Tympanoplasty, or eardrum repair
  • Thyroid surgery, often to avoid cancer
  • Parathyroidectomy, or minimally invasive parathyroid surgery
  • Microlaryngoscopy, or vocal chord surgery
  • Tonsillectomy
  • Septoplasty, often used for deviated septums
  • Nasal valve reconstruction
  • Sinus Surgery
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Parotidectomy, or removal of large salivary glands

Depending on your symptoms, Dr. Babajanian prescribes the appropriate and most effective treatment for you.

Am I a candidate for ENT surgery?

Many ear, nose, throat, neck, and head conditions can be solved with medications. Infections may be prescribed antibiotics to alleviate the bacteria and remove uncomfortable symptoms.

Often a sinus or ear infection, especially in children, can be treated without surgery. If you are a patient with thyroid gland issues, or thyroiditis, this can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications, and often the disease goes into remission.

Patients that require internal repair and cannot be treated with medication alone may be referred to a surgical procedure. For example, thyroid surgery or other neck and head surgery is often recommended if a malignancy (cancer) is suspected. If you are experiencing tonsillitis, surgical removal of the tonsils may be suggested.

Dr. Babajanian is always aware of any risks that may arise from surgery and avoids any damage to other areas of the ear, nose or throat with the least invasive procedures.
