Sinusitis Q & A

What are the primary symptoms of sinusitis?

Typically, you must suffer from two of the following four symptoms to have a positive sinusitis diagnosis. These symptoms include:

  • Postnasal drainage
  • Pain and swelling around your nose
  • Nasal congestion, making it difficult to breath
  • Minimal sense of smell or taste

Can sinusitis symptoms last for a long time?

Yes. In acute cases, your symptoms might improve in as little as four weeks. Some people suffer from chronic sinusitis that lasts for three months or more. While it is possible to have an acute case of sinusitis occasionally, you likely have chronic sinusitis if you continue to have attacks throughout the year, or if your symptoms just never seem to go away.

Will I get a fever?

If you have ever had a seasonal cold, you may have also experienced acute sinusitis. In this case, you may get a fever in addition to the associated chills and cold sweats. If, however, you have chronic sinusitis that lasts for an extended period of time, it is not likely that you will develop a fever.

When should I see a doctor?

You should always see your doctor anytime you are significantly under the weather, just as a precaution. This is especially true when you have a sinus infection because it can have a substantial impact on your sleep, energy levels, and everyday activities. If you suffer from ongoing sinus problems, it is important to see a specialist who can properly diagnose and treat your condition. Chronic sinusitis, which lasts for three months or longer, is caused by inflammation, not a longstanding bacterial infection. Dr. Babajanian can find out what is causing your sinus infection and recommend a course of treatment based on your situation and goals.

Does my sinusitis require surgery?

If you have chronic sinusitis and your symptoms cannot be controlled with medication or other noninvasive treatments, Dr. Babajanian may recommend a surgical treatment. Endoscopic sinus surgery widens the natural drainage pathways between your sinuses and your nose, which helps mucus drain more efficiently and makes it easier for you to breathe.

Endoscopic sinus surgery also makes it easier for sinus sprays and irrigations to reach your sinuses. Sinusitis patients who undergo this type of surgery typically see a significant reduction in the number and severity of sinus infections and experience less severe symptoms when one does occur.
